New York’s largest advocacy group for farmers has come out in support of a bill to legalize recreational marijuana, a measure that, in its current form, would give farmers priority status for cannabis cultivation licenses.

The New York Farm Bureau said in a statement that farmers “recognize the potential opportunity” of growing marijuana for the state’s agricultural economy, the Albany Times Union reported.

It’s unclear if the support will have an effect on the current legislative effort in New York.

The legalization bill has stalled with less than two weeks to go in the session. The session is scheduled to end June 19.
