The Alabama Senate approved a measure Thursday that would create a limited medical cannabis sales and taxation program to treat certain debilitating illnesses and conditions.

The Senate passed the bill 17-6 on Thursday. The measure now goes to the state House of Representatives, which is controlled by Republicans.
