Ohio awarded the state’s first certificate of operation to a medical marijuana processor, which will allow for manufacturing of cannabis edibles, tinctures, topicals and other products.
This could prove a boon to sales for Ohio’s medical marijuana firms because only plant material – flower – has been available for purchase since the state’s first dispensaries opened in mid-January.
Grow Ohio in Muskingum County received its certificate last week.
Kerry Francis, spokeswoman for the Department of Commerce, which oversees Ohio’s MMJ industry, said 37 other processors awarded provisional licenses are working on receiving their certificates of operation.
The state plans to award licenses to two more processors, bringing the total to 40.
A Grow Ohio spokesman noted the company will operate from a 60,000-square-foot facility outside Zanesville.
Roughly 5,500 patients have purchased marijuana in the state, and dispensaries took in more than $300,000 in the first month of sales.
