Nadler SAFE Banking Act, House Judiciary Chair reiterates commitment to marijuana banking reform

The chair of the House Judiciary panel said he is committed to working to advance a comprehensive marijuana bill including social and criminal justice provisions.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat from New York, made the statement on the eve of a scheduled full House vote on a cannabis banking bill called the SAFE Banking Act.

His committee tweeted that he will vote for the SAFE Banking Act, as it addresses “one of the many serious problems that results from the criminalization of marijuana at the federal level.”

He added he plans for his committee to vote on his more comprehensive reform bill, the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act of 2019.

Several civil rights groups last week requested a delay in the vote for the SAFE Banking Act, until a more “holistic” cannabis bill is considered.

They see SAFE Banking Act as primarily benefiting the cannabis industry.

But House Democratic leaders decided to go ahead with the SAFE Banking Act first, scheduling the historic vote for Wednesday.
