Florida is on the verge of eliminating its ban on smokable medical marijuana, a move that is expected to provide a significant boost in sales for the already booming $250 million-a-year market.
The Florida House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill to repeal the ban by a vote of 101-11.
DeSantis has pushed for the repeal, so he’s expected to sign the bill quickly.
“Everyone is very positive about it,” Jeffrey Sharkey, executive director of the Medical Marijuana Business Association of Florida, told Marijuana Business Daily.
Sharkey said he would expect smokable products to be available by summer, noting that the Florida health department must first develop rules.
Voters approved medical marijuana in 2016, but lawmakers banned smokable forms of the plant in a bill signed by then-Gov. Rick Scott in 2017.
The state was sued over the issue, and a judge declared the ban unconstitutional.
