September 2019 | mjbizdaily.com 33 Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation adding new qualifying conditions, including chronic pain, to the state’s medical cannabis program, which likely will boost sales in advance of next year’s recreational MJ launch. The qualifying conditions are chronic pain, anorexia nervosa, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, osteoarthritis, anorexia nervosa, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Neuro-Behcet’s autoimmune disease, neuropathy, polycystic kidney disease and superior canal dehiscence syndrome. The expansion gives added heft to a program that was bolstered substantially in late January, when an opioid-alternative pilot program kicked in. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants now can certify patients for the program. Iowa The state’s Medical Cannabidiol Board added chronic pain as a qualifying condi- tion to use medical marijuana, a development that is expected to increase sales in the state’s heavily regulated market. Chronic pain generally tends to lead sales for medical conditions in many states. The board rejected anxiety disorder and opioid dependence as qualifying conditions and put off a decision on post-trau- matic stress disorder. Qualifying conditions already allowed in Iowa include seizures, Crohn’s disease, AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
