Company News | U.S. & Canada Aurora Makes Portugal Play Edmonton, Alberta-based Aurora Cannabis advanced its strategy to attain “early mover advantage” in countries with nascent medical marijuana markets with an agreement to acquire a 51% ownership stake in Gaia Pharm , based in Funchal, Portugal. Aurora plans to establish a local facility there to produce medical cannabis and derivative products, increasing Aurora’s footprint to 24 countries. Financial terms were not disclosed. Aurora also completed its first commercial export of cannabis oil to the United Kingdom. Jamaican Medical Cannabis Business Raises $20 Million Jacanna , a medical cannabis company headquartered in St. Ann, Jamaica, and with operations in North America and Europe, raised $20 million that it plans to use to cultivate, develop and distribute medical canna- bis as well as strengthen international operations. The company has acquired multiple international licenses and permits. Jacana was founded by Alexandra Chong, the Jamaican serial entrepreneur best known for establishing Lulu, a dating intelligence app with more than 6 million users. Jacana’s leadership team includes Mich Mathews-Spradlin, former CMO of Microsoft, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Bill Tai and former Coca-Cola board member Robert Leechman. Slang Buys Organa Brands for Up to $200 Million Toronto-based Slang Worldwide paid nearly $200 million to acquire Colorado-based Organa Brands , a multistate concentrates and infused product manufacturer and the maker of OpenVape products. OpenVape products have generated more than $170 million in retail revenue since 2014. Slang also paid $16 million in a cash-stock deal to acquire vape product manufacturer NWT Holdings , also known as Firefly.
