Pennsylvania Officials rejected all eight growers that planned to partner with medical schools to research medical marijuana. Those cultivators also would have been allowed to compete in the commercial market with a lower barrier of entry than other licensed MMJ operators. The state is planning to open a second round of applications. In a news release, the state said none of the applicants met the “rigorous requirements of the competitive application review process.” One of the research grower applicants, CuraLeaf, said it would “immediately” appeal the state’s rejection. In related news, state medical schools will be allowed to team with more than one MMJ company to conduct research. Rhode Island The state’s Democratic lawmakers said they will likely discuss whether to legalize recreational cannabis in 2019. Gov. Gina Raimondo said she’s looking at legalizing recreational use more seriously than she has in past years because “our hand is being forced by all of our neighbors.” Massachusetts has legalized cannabis for adult use, and Connecticut’s incoming governor supports legalizing recreational marijuana there. Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello said he’s open to discussing the issue, but Dominick Ruggerio, the Senate president, is more reluctant.
