Oklahoma The state received roughly 800 applications to enter the medical cannabis space in the first three days applications were accepted. According to officials, the state received applications from 389 potential growers, 118 processors and 288 dispensaries between Aug. 25 and Aug. 27. Oklahoma collected $1.5 million in application fees on Aug. 25 alone. Oregon New applicants seeking entry into the state’s recrea- tional marijuana market are going to have to wait at least a year before getting licenses, according to Oregon’s cannabis czar. The state received a flood of new applica- tions ahead of a June 15 moratorium on new licenses. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission, which regulates the state’s marijuana industry, has assigned 11 investigators to process the backlog of license renewals. Retail, whole- sale and processing licenses will have priority, given that those permit types can be processed more quickly than producer applications. Pennsylvania A new medical marijuana dispensary, excited to be selling actual cannabis flower for the first time to registered patients, offered a special deal: two strains of flower for $1 per gram, with a limit of 2 grams. The problem? Pennsylvania forbids such promotions, including any discounts. And the flower in question is typically priced at $10-$15 a gram. The dispensary, Justice Grown Pennsylvania in Edwardsville, was immediately notified by the state Department of Health it was breaking the rules. Utah The Mormon church ramped up its opposition to a pro- posal that would allow medical marijuana in Utah, even as faith leaders insisted they support patients using it under strict controls. At a news conference, a leader from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took the unusual step of speaking publicly against the ballot initia- tive being decided by voters in November. The church is “deeply concerned” the proposal doesn’t have enough oversight, said Jack Gerard, a member of a midlevel global church leadership panel. 30 • Marijuana Business Magazine • October 2018
