State Sens. Steve Sweeney and Nicholas Scutari introduced a bill June 7 to legalize recreational marijuana, but a June 30 budget deadline stymied their efforts. The New Jersey Legisla- ture has a yearlong session, so the legalization effort could be picked up later this year. New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said the New York health department will develop regulations giving people the choice of enrolling in the state’s medical cannabis program if they have been prescribed opioids. Details are still being worked out, but Zucker’s agency cited research showing marijuana can reduce opioid use while eliminating the risk of overdose and reducing the risk of addiction. New York’s announce- ment came just weeks after Illinois lawmakers approved the use of MMJ as an alternative to opioids.
